G20 Summit 2023: Security agencies employ ‘Optical Target Locator’ for delegate protection

As part of security measures implemented for the G20 summit, security agencies have deployed an 'Optical Target Locator,' developed by DRDO.

New Delhi: As part of the rigorous security measures implemented for the G20 summit, security agencies have deployed an ‘Optical Target Locator,’ developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), at the summit venue located in Pragati Maidan. This advanced technology aims to enhance security efforts by detecting potential threats, including snipers, and locating commonly used active and passive surveillance devices.

The ‘Optical Target Locator,’ designed by DRDO, serves as a crucial tool for identifying camouflaged passive or active surveillance equipment such as optical day sights, sniper telescopes, night vision devices, and electronic sensors like the Laser Range Finder. It is capable of operating during both day and night in urban environments, ensuring the safety of delegates during the summit.

This long-range ‘Optical Target Locator’ boasts an operational range of approximately 1500 meters for day and night operations, according to DRDO officials.

In addition to these security measures, local police and Border Security Force (BSF) personnel are diligently patrolling the Yamuna River in Delhi’s Shahdara district, further strengthening security protocols.

The Delhi Police have significantly heightened security measures across the city and continue to maintain active security patrols. Specially trained members of the National Security Guard’s (NSG) dog squad, including Zenon, Ming, Zone, Zozo, and Zinger, along with their handlers and bomb disposal units, are conducting thorough checks in the vicinity of Rajghat to ensure the safety and security of the summit.

Traffic restrictions have also been implemented in the national capital, with the New Delhi district designated as Controlled Zone-I from 5 am on Friday until 11.59 pm on Sunday, coinciding with the duration of the summit. Additionally, Delhi Traffic Police have suspended bus services into the city from September 8 to September 10 as part of the security measures.
