1.48 Crores Seized In Tamil Nadu Ahead Of Bypoll

New Delhi: The income tax department has seized unaccounted cash worth Rs 1.48 crore after an overnight search at a shop of a worker of TTV Dhinakaran’s AMMK in Andipatti near Tamil Nadu’s Theni ahead of assembly by-polls, officials said on Wednesday.

In a joint raid by the Election Commission surveillance squad and Income-Tax department late on Tuesday night, Rs 1.48 crore was seized from a store allegedly run by a supporter of the TTV Dhinakaran-led Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) in the Theni Lok Sabha constituency in Tamil Nadu, according to news agency PTI. During the raid, authorities had to fire warning shots in the air to disperse supporters of the AMMK who objected to the raid.

The raids took place hours after the Election Commission cancelled voting in Vellore, one of the 39 constituencies where elections are to be held tomorrow, over a massive amount of cash seized from the warehouse of a DMK candidate.

The police have also detained four Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam workers for restraining the officials from entering the premise at Andipatti, where a by-poll is scheduled to be held on Thursday.

The officials said they seized number cash packets with the names of voters and ward number written on them. “The packets have ward numbers and number of voters written on them and Rs 300 is written on each of the packets. The raid is continuing,” the senior official said.
