Actress duped Rs 5.79 lakh in ‘Drugs in Parcel’ scam in Mumbai
An actress identified as Anjali Patil have been duped nearly Rs 5.79 lakh in an online courier fraud in Mumbai.
An actress have been duped nearly Rs 5.79 lakh in an online courier fraud in Mumbai. Reportedly, the fraudster falsely claimed that drugs were found in her parcel and implicated her three bank accounts in money laundering cases, deceiving her.
The actress and victim of the cyber fraud, identified as Anjali Patil works in Marathi, Hindi, Telugu and Tamil movies. According to reports, she received a call from an unknown number who claimed to be Deepak Sharma, an employee of FedEx Courier company on December 28.
The accused claimed that a parcel in her name bound for Taiwan contained drugs, leading to its seizure by the customs department. He also said that her Aadhar card’s copy was found inside the parcel. Furthermore, he advised her to consult with the Mumbai cybercrime department as her Aadhar card was misused.
Following this, she received another call via Skype from a person claiming to be Officer Banerjee from the Mumbai cybercrime department. The man impersonated as officer claimed that her Aadhar card was connected to three bank accounts implicated in money laundering cases. For processing the verification process he demanded Rs 96,525, which the actress paid via Googlepay.
Further, Banerjee claimed that bank officials might be involved in the money laundering scam, requesting Rs 4,83,291 for further investigation. Believing on the fraudster, the actress transferred the amount from her Axis bank account to a Punjab national bank account.
However, she later realised that she has fallen into the scam and filed a case with the police on December 29. The actress has registered a case against the two unidentified persons under sections 419 (cheating), and 420 (cheating and dishonesty) of the Indian Penal Code along with relevant sections of the Information Technology Act.
Further investigation is underway.
