Bhubaneswar: The regional centre of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rainfall in southern and coastal Odisha on May 1-2 under the impact of the cyclonic storm ‘Fani’.
At present, Cyclone Fani is centred about 750 km east-southeast of Trincomalee (Sri Lanka), 1,080 km southeast of Chennai and 1,260 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam (Andhra Pradesh). It is likely to intensify into a “very severe cyclonic storm” on Monday, the IMD said.
The MeT officials have forecasted moderate rainfall in south coastal Odisha on 2nd May. Heavy rainfall is also likely to occur at one or two places over Ganjam, Gajapati, Koraput and Rayagada districts on May 2. Similarly, many pockets of coastal Odisha may also experience heavy rainfall on May 3 under the impact of the cyclone.
Fishermen have been advised not venture into deep sea near Odisha coast and the northwest & adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal as sea conditions will be very rough during this time.
Meanwhile, the Odisha Government is taking necessary measures in advance for Cyclone Fani. Special relief commissioner (SRC) Bishnupada Sethi has asked collectors to check all the cyclone shelters and communication systems and ensure that they are in proper usable condition.
