Super typhoon ‘Mangkhut’ hits Philippines

Manila: Category 5 hurricane super typhoon ‘Mangkhut’ made a landfall in Philippines on Saturday evoking heavy rainfall and high winds across the country.

As per the report, the typhoon made landfall on the nation’s largest island Luzon, at 1.40 AM local time and resulted in communication outages and power blackouts, reports The New York Times.

Winds gusting to more than 200 kph (124 mph) tore across the northern tip of the Philippines following the arrival of ‘Mangkhut’ and thousands of trees were uprooted and streets go covered with toppled electric poles.

Mangkhut has a diameter of about 559 miles informed Philippines authorities by adding that it had maximum gusts of 305 kph (190 mph). The super typhoon is expected to clear land on its way towards southern China and Vietnam later in the day.

While the disaster authorities of the country are yet to make an assessment of the damaged caused the super typhoon, the television and videos posted on social media points at a massive destruction of property across the country.

Notably, Hong Kong is also in Mangkhut’s sights and preparations are already on in the country to tackle any kind of eventuality caused by it.
