Workers resume indefinite strike before IMFA Therubali plant

Rayagada: After over a month’s lull, tension erupted again at the India Metal and Ferro Alloys (IMFA) plant premise located at Therubali in the district on Wednesday, after a group of workers locked its main gate and started an indefinite strike seeking fulfillment of their longstanding demands.

Alleging that the plant authorities are making an inordinate delay in fulfilling their legitimate demands, the agitating workers warned IMFA to intensify the stir in the coming days.

An 18-day stalemate was caused at the IMFA plant starting from April 23 this year after the workers resorted to stir seeking fulfilment of a nine-point charter of demand. However, the stir was lifted on May 11 after a tripartite meeting which was held between the district administration, plant authorities and protestors. During the meeting the plant authorities accepted 4-5 demands of the workers and assured them to look into the rest with a war footing note.

However, the agitators have accused the IMFA authorities of not taking any step towards doing the needful in the direction of fulfilling their demands pertaining to education, land issues, drinking water facility, peripheral area development of the plant, rest room for women workers, fixation of minimum wage, EPF, gratuity and bonus even after a month.
