Muslims perform Taraweeh prayer at Times Square for the first time in the history of US

In a rare incident, hundreds of Muslims broke their fast and offered Taraweeh prayers at New York City’s Times Square in the US on the first day of the holy month of Ramzan.

Taraaweeh, a part of the Holy Quran is recited each day during Ramzan.

Around 1500 meals were provided on the pavements of Times Square on Saturday night. It is considered as the city’s busiest artery, which was then followed up by hundreds of Muslims taking part in the Taraweeh prayers.

Times Square is a major commercial area and tourist destination in midtown Manhattan in New York City.

The event organiser informed the local media that the Muslims living in the United States want to celebrate Ramadan in the heart of New York City to show the entire world that Islam is a peaceful religion.

“We want to explain our religion to all who don’t know what is it about that Islam is a religion of peace.”
