Apple iPhone 16 series sale in Indonesia to begin soon, company enters an agreement with Govt
Apple was banned by Indonesian government on the sale and use of iPhone 16 series in October 2024, due to its failure of meeting promised investment threshold in the country.
In the last few months Apple had some hiccups in selling its products in Indonesia. But now it seems that the tech giant has reached an agreement with the Government of Indonesia and the former will be able to sell its banned products. Apple will soon sell iPhone 16 series in Indonesia, mentioned GSMArena while citing report by Bloomberg.
Apple was banned by Indonesian government on the sale and use of iPhone 16 series in October 2024, due to its failure of meeting promised investment threshold in the country. In November, 2024, Apple promised an investment of $100 million in the country and later it was increased to $1 billion. Even though Apple increased its investment amount, Indonesia did not lift the ban and rather asked the manufacturer to start making iPhone components.
It is quiet surprising that the even though the ban has been lifted, Apple still does not have plans to make iPhones in Indonesia. The deal between the Govt. and Apple has been made and it will be made official through a memorandum of agreement said the report. The agreement is expected to be signed this week.
Apple’s investment of $1 billion in Indonesia includes a manufacturing plant for AirTags which will result in around 20% of global AirTag production. There will also be a separate factory for other type of accessories. Apple will also train locals of the country and use them as resource in the research and development of the company.
As Indonesia is a big market with a population of 278 million people, the government’s decision to ban Apple (for months) was a crucial roadblock in the company’s global business.
