India to host 2020 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup

New Delhi: India will host the 2020 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, FIFA confirmed in a statement late on Friday.

The home team will have an added advantage and will also have a great opportunity to showcase their calibre on a global platform.

Spain is the defending champion while New Zealand and Canada finished third and fourth respectively. The development comes after India played hosts to FIFA U-17 men’s World Cup.

The bidding process for the tournament had started last year. France had also expressed interest to host the tournament, but India turned out to be the country hosting it in 2020.

As the host country, India automatically qualifies for the 16-team showpiece event. The six continental qualifying tournaments are yet to begin.

Besides the Under-17 Women’s World Cup, India had also expressed interest in hosting the Under-20 Women’s WC.

The venues for the FIFA U-17 Women’s WC has not been finalised but a scrutinised enquiry into stadiums in underway informed All India Football Federation General Secretary Kushal Das.
