IMD issues cyclone alert day after monsoon arrives

New Delhi: As the southwest monsoon made its onset over Kerala with a delay of seven days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday warned of a cyclonic storm building along the south-east Arabian Sea adjoining Lakshadweep. This might delay the advancement of monsoon.

A low-pressure area was formed on Sunday which is likely to intensify into a depression in the next two days over the south-east and adjoining east-central Arabian Sea. Thereafter, it is likely to move north-northwestwards and intensify into a cyclonic storm after a day, the IMD said.

The weather department also said that wind speeds reaching up to 40-50 kmph are very likely to prevail over Southeast Arabian Sea and adjoining Lakshadweep.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into these areas for the next few days as IMD has predicted squally weather.

Over the next one day, conditions are favourable for monsoon advance into remaining parts of South Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep, Kerala, parts of Tamil Nadu and northeastern states, according to IMD.

Meanwhile, heat wave to severe heat wave conditions very likely to prevail over Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, southern parts of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh during next 2 days. The intensity and spatial extent of heating are very likely to reduce substantially from 12th June.
