Good news for the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) members as the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has announced new updated rules that will immensely help lakhs of people who are facing problems due to error in their date of joining, date of leaving, reason of leaving, nationality and updating Aadhaar card.
The EPFO on its X handle informed that the members can now make changes/corrections in date of joining, date of leaving, reason of leaving, nationality and update Aadhaar card in EPF records online through Unified Member Portal.

If the updates are being made after the death of the employee, then it will be considered as Major Change, but if he/she is alive and the updates are being done then it will be called minor change.
For the minor change, the EPF members have to submit two out of the several documents meant for the minor changes. However, those who are applying for the major changes have to submit three out of the several documents meant for the same.
Following documents are needed for updating date of joining:
- Employee register
- Attendance register
- Appointment letter or any other document as established maintain under any certain or state labour act
- Letter of establishment on their letter head clearly stating the date of joining and duly signed by Employer or the authorized signatory supported by ECR of the employee during the said period.
Following documents are needed for updating reason of leaving:
- Employee register
- Attendance register
- Appointment letter or any other document as establishment maintain under any central or state labour act.
- Letter of establishment on their letter head clearly stating the date of joining and duly signed by employer or the authorized signatory supported by ECR of the employee during the said period.
Following documents are needed for updating date of leaving:
- Resignation letter/termination letter
- Experience certificate or any other document as establishment maintain under any central or state labour act.
- Wave ship/salary slip/ full and final letter
- Letter or establishment on their letter head clearly stating the date of leaving and duly signed by employer or the authorized signatory.
- Death certificate issued by the Registrar of Birth and Death (edited in SOP version 3.0).
Employees also can change their nationality. This can be done in two ways- major changes and minor changes. The change of nationality from Non-SSA counties to SSA countries will be considered as major changes while the other changes will be termed as minor change.
Following documents are needed for updating the nationality:
- Passport
- Person of Indian Origin (PIO) card issued by Government of India.
- Valid Long Term Visa (LTV) along with Foreign Passport (valid or expired) of origin country issued to minorities communities of Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan namely Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jain, Parsis and Christians.
- Valid Visa along with Foreign Passport (valid only) issued in case of Foreign Nationals.
- Tibetan Refugee Card
- Video ID/ Elector Photo Identity Card (EPIC) (edited in SOP version 3.0)
- Nationality Certificate/Domicile Certificate (edited in SOP version 3.0).
- Appointment letter/offer of appointment in which nationality is mentioned (edited in SOP version 3.0)
- Birth Certificate issued by the Registrar of Births and deaths (only in case where the nationality is not available in system and now getting updated as INDIAN for members who had acquired citizenship of Indian by birth and has domicile in India) (edited in SOP version 3.0).
In order to update your Aadhar Card on the unified EPFO portal, you need to link your mobile phone with the Aadhar Card and do so.
