Berhampur: An endangered pangolin was rescued from a village in Ganjam district of Odisha on Tuesday. The pangolin was rescued from the Panditray sahi in Chikitipentho area of the district.
As per reports, a farmer spotted a live pangolin in his paddy field near the Panditray sahi in Chikitipentha. He initially got frightened and then went to the Sahi and informed about it to others.
After knowing about the pangolin many people from the sahi flocked to the paddy field of the farmer to witness the rare reptile. Within no time they informed about it to the Forest Department.
After getting information the officers of the Forest Department reached the village and rescued the pangolin. It has been learnt that the forest department took away the pangolin and checked up its health. And then as it was found fit, they released it at a lonely place into the forest.
It is to be noted that pangolins are listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List and are protected under Indian law. Pangolins are hunted for their scales and meat, which are in high demand on the black market. The destruction of their natural habitats due to deforestation, urbanization, and infrastructure development has reduced their population.
