In a chilling case, a 32-year-old woman, identified as Poonam from Haryana’s Panipat has been arrested for allegedly murdering three girls over the past two years and also for killing her own three-year-old son. Police said, the murders were driven by the accused’s obsessive jealousy of the children’s beauty.
The case came to light after Panipat police uncovered similarities between the deaths while investigating the latest incident on Monday.
The most recent victim was 6-year-old Vidhi, who went missing during a wedding function in Naultha village. She was later found in a storeroom on the first floor of the house, lying face down in a plastic tub filled with water. CCTV footage confirmed Poonam’s movements around the scene.
Poonam allegedly manipulated trust to isolate the children. On the night of Vidhi’s murder, she reportedly lured the girl to a water-filled tub under the pretense of sleepover, then drowned her when the child struggled.
Panipat Superintendent of Police Bhupender Singh revealed at a press conference that the accused Poonam, targetted children within her family and extended relatives from 2023 to 2025.
The first known incident occurred in 2023 in Bhawar village in Sonipat, where Poonam allegedly drowned her sister-in-law’s nine-year-old daughter. To avoid suspicion, she also killed her own three-year-old son, making the deaths appear accidental. In August 2025, she repeated the same method on her cousin’s six-year-old daughter in Sewah village.
Under interrogation by authorities, Poonam confessed to all four murders.
Meanwhile, Poonam in judicial custody and investigation is underway to know the full extent of her crimes.
