Sanghagra waterfall in Odisha’s Keonjhar: Breath-taking beauty beckons tourists
The waterfall originates from the Machhakandana River and plunges 90 feet.
Keonjhar: The Sanghagra waterfall, located in Odisha’s Keonjhar district, is just 5 km from Keonjhar town. Surrounded by dense forests alongside National Highway 49, it’s a major tourist attraction in the state. The waterfall’s stunning scenery draws visitors from within and outside the state, including filmmakers who come for shoots. As tourist season peaks, thousands flock here daily.
Keonjhar district boasts many tourist spots, but Sanghagra waterfall stands out. It’s nestled among natural hills and mountains, showcasing nature’s beauty.
The waterfall originates from the Machhakandana River and plunges 90 feet. Researchers suggest the name “Sanghagra” comes from the “Gharghar” sound of water hitting rocks.
Sanghagra’s enchanting surroundings have captivated poets, writers, philosophers, painters, and filmmakers, making it a tourist hotspot. While visitors come year-round, November to February sees a significant surge. The lush green grounds and rose gardens have earned it the nickname “Kashmir of Keonjhar”.
Safety measures, like barricades, are in place for tourists. Visitors enjoy dipping in the water, boating in the artificial lake, and strolling through the park. Local shops sell specialties like Bara Koli Achar, Char Koli, Amla, and more.
Ramesh Naik, Additional Deputy Director of Keonjhar Tourism, said the state government spent Rs 4.28 crore in 2023-24 on infrastructure like parking and picnic areas. Recently, Rs 4.33 crore was spent on cottages, gazebos, and beautification.
“Tourists can enjoy Sanghagra’s beauty with all facilities and safety,” Naik added.
