US President Donald Trump announces ‘Golden Fleet’, a new generation of advanced U.S. Navy warships
US President Donald Trump announced a new heavy battleship ‘ Golden Fleet’ titled "Trump Class", which is 100 times more powerful than any battleship ever built.
US President Donald Trump on Monday announced a new ‘ Golden Fleet’ heavy battleship titled “Trump Class”, which is claimed to be faster, bigger and 100 times more powerful than any battleship ever built in the country. The new ‘ Golden Fleet’ U.S. Navy warships will increase US’s Sea power, said Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.
According to the announcement the golden fleet will consist of two vessels having between 20 and 25 ships marking the first large-scale battleship programme since World War II. The first vessel will be named as “USS Defiant”.
US Navy Secretary John Phelan said the Trump-class ships would carry the largest naval gun ever installed and would be capable of deploying nuclear-armed, sea-launched cruise missiles making them among the most powerful warships in history.
The proposal has raised concerns regarding the cost implications and production capability as the estimates suggests each ship costs ranging from $4-6 billion per ship to potentially $10-15 billion each depending on technology and design, which is a staggering amount compared to current destroyers.
President Trump also revealed his intentions to take direct and personal involvement in the ship designing process, citing his past interest and role in naval ship design. “Because I’m a very aesthetic person,” Trump said, emphasizing his hands-on approach to the project.
Further details regarding construction timelines and congressional approval are expected in the coming months.
