Social messaging platform WhatsApp has announced new translation feature for its users across Android and iOS smartphones. The new feature is called Message Translations and as its name suggests, allows users to translate text messages in unknown language to a known language.

The Message Translations feature works conveniently for person to person conversation, group chats, and Channels.

“With more than 3 billion users in over 180 countries, we’re always working to keep our users closely connected, no matter where they are in the world. But we understand that sometimes language can be a barrier to getting things done or expressing how you truly feel. That’s why we’re excited to bring message translations to WhatsApp, so you can more easily communicate across languages,” said the official blog post of WhatsApp.

If you find an unknown language in a WhatsApp conversation, you can simply long-press the specific message and then tap ‘translate’. After that they can choose a language they want the message to get translated in. The Android users have an option to enable automatic translation for an entire chat thread, so that all future incoming messages in that conversation are translated as well.

In order to address privacy concerns, WhatsApp has claimed that all translations happen on-device and this means that WhatsApp cannot see them.

WhatsApp is rolling out Message Translations feature for iPhone and Android users in select languages. More languages will be added later.

“We’re rolling out message translations to Android and iPhone users gradually from today, in a few select languages to start with more to follow. Android users will find it available in six languages: English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic. For our iPhone users, the feature will launch in 19+ languages,” mentioned the WhatsApp official blog.
