Foldable iPhone may skip face ID, could bring touch ID instead
According to fresh reports, the foldable iPhone may not feature Face ID. Sources suggest Apple might be facing space constraints inside the foldable chassis, and the Face ID sensors may simply not fit alongside other internal components.
Apple’s long-rumored foldable iPhone might finally arrive next year along with iPhone 18 series, and if recent leaks are to be believed, it could be a breath of fresh air for Apple users but not in the way many expected.
According to fresh reports, the foldable iPhone may not feature Face ID. Sources suggest Apple might be facing space constraints inside the foldable chassis, and the Face ID sensors may simply not fit alongside other internal components. This has reportedly pushed Apple to explore alternative unlocking methods.
So, what could replace Face ID?
Earlier leaks indicate that Apple might bring back Touch ID in the form of a fingerprint scanner. However, it may not be an under-display sensor. Reports suggest that due to similar space limitations, Apple might use a side-mounted fingerprint scanner instead, though nothing has been officially confirmed yet.
The latest leak also reconfirms Apple’s focus on a wider internal display. Because of this design choice, the fold able iPhone could have an unusual shape when folded. The reported folded dimensions are around 120.6 x 83.8 x 9.6 mm, making it somewhat similar to the BlackBerry Passport, though possibly a bit smaller.
As for the displays, the outer screen might measure around 5.49 inches with a 1422×2088 resolution, resulting in a rare 9:13 aspect ratio. The internal foldable screen could be about 7.76 inches with a 2713×1920 resolution, an aspect ratio closer to some iPad Pro models.
For now, these details are based on leaks and reports, and Apple has not confirmed anything officially. Still, if these claims turn out to be true, the fold able iPhone could mark a major design shift for the company.
