New Delhi: Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma are currently dominating headlines with their participation in the 2025-26 Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT). Both of them have played over 40 domestic matches, which means they fall into the highest bracket of BCCI’s domestic pay structure.

For these legends, playing for Delhi or Mumbai is a matter of pride and match practice, as the financial rewards at this level are a tiny fraction of their overall earnings.

In the Vijay Hazare Trophy, player payments are based on experience and matches played and not on star status.

Senior cricketers like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who fall in the top BCCI domestic bracket with over 40 matches, earn Rs.60,000 per match day, while reserves get Rs.30,000. Players with 21–40 matches receive Rs.50,000 per game, and those with up to 20 matches are paid Rs.40,000, with lower fees for reserves.

As the tournament follows a one-day format, they receive Rs.60,000 per game when included in the playing XI—an amount that barely matches the cost of a single premium business-class flight between venues and don’t even come close to the crores they earn in the IPL.

Cricket experts say this structure ensures equality within domestic competitions and keeps the focus on performance rather than reputation.

Fans, however, continue to express surprise at how India’s biggest cricketing icons earn the same domestic fees as other seasoned players, underlining the spirit of Indian domestic cricket.
