New-Delhi: Former Asian Games gold-winning discus thrower Seema Punia has been handed a 16-month ban for failing a dope test.

The 42-year-old’s suspension came into effect on 10 November, the date of the Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel’s (ADDP) decision  according to the updated list of offenders released by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA).

However, NADA did not disclose the substance for which she tested positive.

This latest violation adds to Punia’s  doping history, which includes two previous offences, one of them committed at the junior level when she was just 17.

She took part at the Hangzhou Asian Games in 2023 where she won a bronze medal. She is also a four-time Commonwealth Games-medallist, three of them being silver medals.
