A shocking video capturing a women hanging precariously on the outside of a packed suburban local train at rush hour in Mumbai has gone viral. The 14-second video, purportedly shot between Kalyan and Mumbai CST, points towards the extreme overloading problem besetting Mumbai’s suburban railway network.
The video captures women hanging onto the footboard, some clearly upset and others trying to keep up with the speed as the train hurries along the tracks. The clip triggered widespread anger, with activists and commuters demanding instant reforms. Lawyer AS Pradhan expressed concern, asking the Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to act urgently to prevent Mumbaikars from facing dangers to their safety. He averred that the Railway Minister needed to take steps to ensure people’s lives.
The official X account of Indian Railways, RailwaySeva, replied to the video, indicating that the matter had been taken up with the concerned official. Meanwhile, people on social media have been strongly responding, with one of them posting that Mumbai locals must have automatic doors so that such a risk is avoided. One of the users pointed out that the overcrowding is not only restricted to platforms but also inside train carriages, where individuals crowd near the gates, adding to the risk.
