In a surprising incident, a family’s Diwali cleaning turned into a lucky discovery when they found Rs 2 lakh in old Rs.2000 banknotes hidden inside an old DTH box. The incident came to light after a Reddit user shared the story in a viral post titled ‘Biggest Diwali Safai of 2025.’

The user mentioned in the post that his mother stumbled upon the money while cleaning their home for Diwali. The cash, believed to have been kept by their father during the demonetisation period, had been forgotten for years.

“During Diwali safai, my mom found Rs 2 lakh in old 2000 rupee notes… hidden inside an old DTH box, probably kept there by my desi dad back in demonetisation times. We haven’t told him yet,” the user wrote.

The post quickly gained attention online, sparking humorous and informative comments. Many users pointed out that the notes could still be exchanged at RBI offices.

“They are still legal tender despite being phased out. You can exchange them with a Rs 20,000 limit per visit,” one user wrote. Another added, “Just consult your CA before visiting the RBI.”

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had announced the withdrawal of Rs.2000 denomination notes from circulation on May 19, 2023. As per RBI data, Rs.2000 notes worth Rs 5,884 crore are still in circulation, while 98.35% of the total value, Rs 3.56 lakh crore has already been returned.

While most families find old memories during Diwali cleaning, this family’s “Diwali Safai” literally brought hidden wealth to light.
