Bhubaneswar: Uttam Mohanty, Odia cinema’s iconic actor is no more. While the whole of Odisha, his fans across the globe, family, well-wishers and above all Odia film industry community are missing this superstar of Odia films, he passed away yesterday while under treatment at a hospital in Gurgaon at the age of 67 years.
Uttam Mohanty has many blockbuster Odia films to his credit. While he has acted in about 135 films including films in other languages, he has also acted in a few TV serials. Mohanty has won many awards for his strong acting. He hails from Baripada, Mayurbhanj.
Uttam Mohanty was the only Odia actor to receive the Best Actor Award from the state government for three consecutive years in 1982, 1983 and 1984. In 1999, he was awarded with the prestigious Jayadeva Award.
Initiating his career from film ‘Abhimaan’ in 1977, Mohanty has many super duper hit movies to his credit. The list of his super hit and popular films include – Abhimaan, Sankha Mahuri (1978), ‘Sarapancha Babu’, Danda Balunga (1984), Ramayana, Chinha Achinha, Nijhum Ratira Sathi, Akshay Trutiya, Arati, Astaranga, Dekh Khabar Rakh Najar, Abhilasha, Jhiati Sita Pari, Jai Phula, Janani, Chaka Bhaunri, Jaga Hatare Pagha, Mamata Mage Mula, Palataka, Puja Phoola, Samaya Bada Balabaan, Sankha Sindura, Sahari Bagha, Sata Kebe Luchi Rahena, School Master, Aei Ama Sansara, Jor Jar Mulak Tar, Paka Kambala Pota Chhata, Badhu Nirupama, Chaka Akhi Sabu Dekhuchi, Aei Ta Duniya, Golamgiri, Phula Chandana, Suna Chadhei, Tunda Baida, Jahaku Rakhibe Ananta, Kanyadana, Thili Jhia Heli Bohu, Pua Mora Kala Thakura, Daiba Daudi, Rajanigandha, Paradeshi Chadhei, Thakura Acchanti Chaubahaku, Panchu Pandav, Bidhira Bidhan, Kapala Likhana, Naga Panchami, Pua Mora Bhola Shankara, Pagala Karichi Paunji Tora and Bidyarana.
Uttam Mohanty has also acted in a few TV serials including – Katha Kahuthile Saribani, Panatakani, Sara Akasha and Uttardayi.
When it comes to awards and appreciations, Uttam Mohanty got the Odisha Living Legend Award in 2012, Orissa State Film Awards for Best Actor for Phula Chandana, Jhiati Sita Pari, Danda Balunga and Suna Chadhei. He also got State Film Award for Best Supporting actor for To Binu Anyagati Nahin. He was awarded with the most prestigious Jayadeb Puraskar in 1999. Besides, he has got Chitrapuri, Banichitra, Chalachitra Jagata awards. He also has got the 5th FITFAT Biscope Award 2008.
Uttam Mohanty was married to Aparajita, one of the legendary actors of Odia films. And this superstar actor couple has a superstar son Babusan Mohanty, one of the leading actors of present day Odia film industry. Besides, Uttam Mohanty, Aparajita and Babushan have also many awards and appreciations to their credit.
