Supreme Court takes stern stance against Odisha DGP, issues contempt notice for ‘casual’ approach
The Supreme Court has taken a stern stance against Odisha Director General of Police (DGP) and issued a show-cause notice for contempt of court.
New Delhi: The Supreme Court has taken a stern stance against Odisha Director General of Police (DGP) and issued a show-cause notice for contempt of court.
According to the Live Law India, a bench comprising Justices Ahsanuddin Amanullah and Prasanna B. Varale issued the notice on December 1, 2025 during a hearing related to a 2017 fatal motor accident case involving a Bolero pickup van.
The Supreme Court accused the DGP of adopting a “very casual approach” towards its judicial directives.
The apex court had previously directed the DGP to personally ensure a thorough investigation into the vehicle’s ownership and insurance details. However, the DGP delegated the task to a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of the CID, Crime Branch.
The report submitted by the DSP was found to be lacking in depth. No fresh inquiries were made, and key clarifications from the insurance company were ignored.
Unimpressed by the state counsel’s explanation, the Court has ordered the DGP to file a personally affirmed show-cause affidavit by the next hearing date, explaining why contempt action should not be initiated against him for this dereliction of duty.
