‘Shakti’ Cyclone Forms in Arabian Sea, Not Expected to Hit Mainland India

Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued cyclone ‘Shakti’ warning that is developing over the Arabian Sea. The eye of the cyclone is located at a distance of 270 km from Naliya (Gujarat) in the South western direction.

It is moving west-southwestwards at a speed of 8 to 12 kmph. The wind speed is 65 kmph. The sea is rough along the Gujarat-Maharashtra coast. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea till October 6. Sri Lanka has named the cyclone ‘Shakti’. ‘Shakti’ means strength. This is the first cyclone of the current cyclone season in the Arabian Sea.

According to the release of IMD, the warning covers Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg. The wind speed, reaching 45-55 kmph and gusting to 65 kmph, is likely to prevail over the North Maharashtra coast between October 3 and 5.

The wind speed may increase depending on the cyclone’s intensity. The Sea conditions are very rough, with rough seas expected along the nothern Maharashtra coast until October 5.
