Restoration work underway in Gajapati as heavy rains triggered landslide

Landslide in Gajapati district due to heavy rains induced by the low pressure had completely disrupted normal life.

Gajapati: The restoration work for the landslide in Gajapati is underway. The low-pressure rains triggered landslide.

According to information, the landslide in Gajapati brought the normal life to a standstill. The local administration, ODRAF and the fire brigade have been engaged in the rescue work after the landslide hit at more than 6 places in Pekat, Mohana, Gumma and Nuagarh blocks of Rayagada block.

It has been over 48 hours since a father-son duo Bappu Kartik and Rajik from Pekat village went missing in the landslide.

Firefighters are searching with the help of sniffing dogs. More than 20 villages in Mohana and Rayagada blocks were cut off due to the heavy rains that washed away the roads.

The blockade was cleared, communication has been restored, though several places are yet to be cleared. In Gajapati district, landslides and floods occurred in some places due to the low-pressure rain. The rain is starting to subside.

The Bansadhara river is flowing near the danger mark in Kashinagar. But the water level is slowly receding.

Gajapati district is located in the Eastern Ghats. Due to heavy rains in the steep hills here, there is a risk of landslides at various times.

Heavy rains in Devagiri and Mahendragiri etc. increase the risk of landslides. 129 areas of Rayagada, Gumma, Udayagiri, Nuagarh and Mohana have been identified as high risk zones.
