Rayagada: Woman doctor falls prey to digital arrest scam, loses Rs 12 lakh
A woman doctor reportedly became the victim of the digital arrest scam recently and lost a total of Rs 12 lakh in Rayagada district of Odisha.
Rayagada: A woman doctor reportedly became the victim of the digital arrest scam recently and lost a total of Rs 12 lakh in Rayagada district of Odisha.
As informed by sources, Dr Mamata Choudhury, the Additional District Public Health Officer at the office of the Chief District Medical and Public Health Officer in Rayagada recently got a phone call from a an unknown person who claimed to be from a courier office.
In course of conversation, the unidentified person informed Choudhury that they have received a suspicious bag linked to her Aadhaar card had serious charges have been registered in her name.
All of a sudden, the call was transferred to another person who talked to Choudhury by identifying himself as a police officer. He threatened the doctor of severe legal action if she fails to cooperate with them and leaves the house until competition of the verification process.
Finding no other way, the lady doctor was forced to follow the fraudster’s instructions and subsequently lost more than Rs 12 lakh within two days.
However, Dr Mamata Choudhury lodged a police complaint at the Rayagada Town Police Station after realizing that she fell prey to the digital arrest scam. Based on this, the town police along with the cyber police have initiated an investigation into the matter and urged the general public to report in case get such calls from unknown person.
