Bhubaneswar: Eighteen Odisha wrestlers, including 10 boys and 8 girls, heading to the 69th National School Wrestling Championship in Uttar Pradesh, were recently had to sit by the side of the toilet in a general train compartment due to lack of confirmed tickets for them.

The team, accompanied by four teachers, had only four confirmed tickets, leaving the rest to endure the bitter cold in uncomfortable conditions. Even, the same situation occurred on their return journey.

A viral video of the incident sparked outrage, with opposition parties calling it a “disgrace to the state” and questioning the players’ honor and safety.

The State School and Mass Education Department has ordered an investigation in this regard, but no action has been taken against officials so far. The incident has raised concerns about the treatment of national-level players and the state’s commitment to promoting sports.
