Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government is mulling over changing the Diwali holiday to October 20 (Monday) from October 21 (Tuesday).

Speculation regarding the change of the Diwali holiday to October 20 (Monday) started reportedly after the Revenue and Disaster Management Department gave a proposal in this regard to Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi today.

If the proposal gets the Chief Minister’s nod, the Diwali holiday in Odisha will be October 20 (Monday) instead of October 21 (Tuesday).

It is to be noted here that a couple of days ago the Mukti Mandap Pandit Sabha in Puri had already clarified the Diwali celebration date i.e October 20 (Monday). Apart from clarifying, the Sabha also had urged the government to declare October 20 a public holiday instead of October 21 saying that the Amavasya (new moon) lasts only 14 minutes on October 21, making it inauspicious for Diwali celebrations.
