Nuapada by-election to be held on November 11, check details

According to Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, the Nuapada by-election will be held on November 11 while the counting of votes will be done on November 14.

New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) today announced the schedule for the much-awaited by-election to the Nuapada Assembly constituency of Odisha. According to Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, the Nuapada by-election will be held on November 11 while the counting of votes will be done on November 14.

In a press meet, Kumar announced that the Gazette Notification for Nuapada by-election will be issued on October 13 (Monday) following which the candidates can file their nominations on or before October 20 (Monday).

As per the Nuapada by-election schedule, the scrutiny of the candidates’ nominations will be done on October 22 (Wednesday) and those who want can withdraw their candidatures before October 24 (Friday).

Following this, the voting for the Nuapada by-election will be held on November 11 and the counting on November 14.

The Election Commission of India had earlier announced that the by-election in Nuapada assembly constituency will be held concurrently with the upcoming Bihar Legislative Assembly elections.

Odisha Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) R S Gopalan had informed that there are a total of 358 polling stations in Nuapada assembly segment, out of which 36 are in urban areas and 322 are in rural areas. Besides, a  total of 2,48,256 voters ares there in the assembly constituency, of which, 1,22,103 are male, 1,26,132 are female and 21 are third gender voters.

Notably, the by-poll in Nuapada assembly constituency was necessitated following the untimely death of sitting MLA Rajenda Dholakia, who died on September 8 while undergoing treatment for kidney-related ailments at a private hospital in Chennai. Dholakia, who was 69 year-old during his death, was a four-time MLA from the Nuapada assembly constituency of Odisha and was a minister in the Naveen Patnaik cabinet between June 2022 and June 2024.

With Dholakia’s death, the number of BJD MLAs in the 147-member Odisha assembly has come down to 50, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has 78, Congress 14, CPI (M) 1, and three independent legislators.
