Nilagiri: An unusual dispute over a goat has put Nilagiri police in an awkward situation after two people claimed ownership of the same animal. The incident took place in Ward No. 8 under Nilagiri NAC limits of Balasore district in Odisha on Tuesday.

According to sources, about one and a half months ago, a goat purportedly belonging to Monalisa Das of Sananta village went missing. Despite repeated searches, her family failed to trace out the animal. After nearly six weeks, Monalisa spotted the goat grazing in a nearby field and attempted to take it back home. However, Mama Bindhani of the Sananta Gudikhania area claimed the goat as his own, leading to a heated argument between the two at the spot.

Later, Monalisa took the goat home, following which both parties approached Nilagiri police station and lodged written complaints, each claiming ownership of the goat.

Acting on the complaint, police asked Monalisa to bring the goat to the police station. Accordingly, the animal was brought to the police station, and both claimants were called for questioning. In an attempt to resolve the issue, the police released the goat in front of both parties, stating that whoever the goat approached would be considered its rightful owner. However, the goat did not go to either of them, leaving the matter unresolved.

During questioning, Monalisa stated that she owns more than 25 goats and claimed that the disputed goat had a blue-colored mark on its horn. She also brought another goat to the police station as proof. On the other hand, Mama Bindhani claimed that he had purchased the goat from another owner.

As neither party could prove their rightful ownership, the police failed to reach a settlement. Nilagiri police are now investigating the matter to determine the actual owner. Until a final decision is taken, the goat will remain in police custody.
