Bhubaneswar: Doctors at Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) have successfully treated a 34-year-old woman suffering from Nodopathy and Paranodopathy, a newly discovered and extremely rare neurological disease that causes severe nerve damage leading to complete paralysis.

The disease is so rare that no data is available on its incidence in India, and it has been included in medical literature only a couple of years ago. Owing to its recent discovery, diagnosis and treatment remain major challenges across the world.

The doctors at KIMS took up this medical challenge with determination, ensuring the patient’s recovery despite the rarity and complexity of the disease. The case demonstrates high-end treatment facilities and clinical expertise available at KIMS as well as the expertise of the doctors, cementing its position as a leading centre for advanced neurological and critical care in the region.

The patient, Subhashee Chal from Baripada in Mayurbhanj district, was admitted to KIMS on June 24 after she became completely paralysed, unable to move any part of her body except her head. Despite her critical condition, she remained fully conscious and aware throughout.

“It all began suddenly one fine morning when I couldn’t move my hands or feet,” Subhashee recalled. “I never thought I would return alive. The doctors at KIMS gave me a new life.”

Dr. Santosh Dash, Professor and Head, Department of Neurology, explained, “The patient was paralysed neck down and unable to walk or speak. We had to put her on a ventilator. This disease is exceptionally rare. Diagnosis is not possible within Odisha as the required blood tests are conducted in Kerala.”

He added, “The best part was the patient’s trust in the doctors and the hospital. The KIMS management and our Founder Sir deserve thanks for their unwavering support in such a challenging case.”

Dr. Abinash Badapanda, Assistant Professor, Department of Critical Care, KIMS, said, “She was on a ventilator for over two months. Managing such a rare and complex neurological case is a milestone in critical care treatment.

The patient has been discharged after a long stay in the hospital and is leading a normal life now.

The founder of KIIT, KISS and KIMS Achyuta Samanta has congratulated the doctors for the pathbreaking treatment provided to the patient, wishing her a long and healthy life.
