Bhubaneswar: The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and the Central Tools and Training Centre (CTTC), Bhubaneswar have unveiled ‘Vyommitra’, India’s first humanoid robot for space. The robot will be part of ISRO’s upcoming humanless Gaganyaan mission, which is set to launch in December.
According to the reports, Vyommitra has been developed by engineers at CTTC Bhubaneswar in collaboration with ISRO. The humanoid has a head, two arms and a partial torso, allowing it to perform tasks similar to a human inside the spacecraft.
Further, it will monitor temperature, pressure and air quality, sending real-time data to mission control. The robot is expected to operate in space for nearly two years, helping scientists test spacecraft systems before sending astronauts.
The project reportedly took around four months to complete and cost about Rs 40-50 lakh. Over 200 engineers and staff from CTTC worked on the project.
Vyommitra was built using 3D-printing technology and strong materials like aluminum, stainless steel and titanium to survive extreme temperatures and radiation in space. The design and testing process took almost two years before the final version was ready.
The centre has previously contributed high precision components for ISRO’s Chandrayaan missions, rockets, missiles and MIG aircraft.
Vyommitra will also provide critical data on spacecraft performance, life-support systems and cabin conditions, helping ISRO prepare for safe and successful space missions with humans in the near future.
