IMD warns of heavy to very heavy rain in Odisha from tomorrow
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday issued orange warning for heavy to very heavy rain in Odisha from tomorrow.
Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday issued orange warning for heavy to very heavy rain in Odisha from tomorrow.
The low-pressure area over north Odisha and adjoining areas of northwest Bay of Bengal & Gangetic West Bengal persisted over the same region, said the weather department adding that the associated cyclonic circulation extended upto 7.6 km above mean sea level tilting southwestwards with height. It is likely to persist over the same region and become less marked during next 12 hours.
It further said that an upper air cyclonic circulation formed over coastal areas of central Myanmar and adjoining eastcentral Bay of Bengal upto middle tropospheric levels today. It is likely to move westwards gradually and under its influence, a lowpressure area is likely to form over north and adjoining central Bay of Bengal on September 25. Moving nearly westwards, it is very likely to concentrate into a depression over northwest and adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal off South Odisha- North Andhra Pradesh coasts on September26. It is very likely to cross South Odisha-North Andhra Pradesh coasts around September27, predicted the IMD.
The trough from the cyclonic circulation associated with the Low-Pressure area over north Odisha & adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal and Gangetic West Bengal to Telangana across Odisha has become less marked and the other trough from the upper air cyclonic circulation associated with the Low-Pressure area over north Odisha & adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal and Gangetic West Bengal to South Interior Karnataka across Odisha, south Chhattisgarh, Telangana, north interior Karnataka has become less marked.
In view of these, the regional centre of the IMD has issued the following heavy to very heavy rainfall warnings in Odisha from tomorrow.
Day 1 (Valid upto 8.30 AM of September 25):
- Orange Warning: Heavy to very heavy rain and Thunderstorm with lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Koraput, Nabarangpur and Nuapada.
- YELLOW WARNING: Heavy rain and thunderstorm with lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Malkangiri, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Rayagada, Ganjam, Gajapati and Balangir.
- Thunderstorm with lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Sonepur, Boudh, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj.
Day 2 (Valid from 8.30 AM of September 25 to 8.30 AM of September 26):
- ORANGE WARNING: Heavy to very heavy rain and thunderstorm with lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Malkangiri.
- YELLOW WARNING: Heavy rain and thunderstorm with lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Koraput, Nabarangpur, Rayagada and Gajapati.
- Thunderstorm with lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur.

- ORANGE WARNING: Heavy to very heavy rain and thunderstorm with lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Koraput and Rayagada.
- YELLOW WARNING: Heavy rain and thunderstorm with lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph and gusting to 60 kmph very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khurda, Malkangiri, Kalahandi, Kandhamal and Balasore.
- Heavy rain and thunderstorm with lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 20-30 kmph gusting to 40 kmph very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Mayurbhanj.
