Deadly Chinese Manja thread seized in Cuttack ahead of kite flying season, watch

Cuttack: The Cuttack Municipal Corporation’s Enforcement squad has seized four bags of deadly Chinese manja thread from a business establishment in Jhola Sahi area of Cuttack in Odisha on Thursday.

The team is now investigating the source of this large quantity of hazardous thread.

The manja thread, used to fly kites, has been deemed deadly due to its hazardous composition, which has been linked to injuries and fatalities during kite flying. Authorities are on high alert as the kite flying season approaches.

Tragically, there have been several reported deaths in Odisha due to manja thread accidents. In 2021, a youth was killed in Cuttack when he was hit by a manja thread while riding a bike with his wife. In another incident, a person died after getting entangled in a kite string, which slit his throat.

In 2024, a law student and two others were injured in separate incidents in Odisha’s capital, Bhubaneswar, after getting entangled in kite strings. These incidents highlight the dangers of using Chinese manja thread, which is banned in the state.
