Congress women wing protest over rising number of crimes against women in Odisha
Hundreds of party workers and leaders including AICC leader Tulika Karma staged the protest under the leadership of Odisha Pradesh Mahila Congress (OPMC) President Meenakshi Bahinipati.
Bhubaneswar: A day after Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi informed the Odisha Assembly that 37,611 cases of crimes against women were reported from between June 2024 and July 2025, the women wing of the Odisha Congress today staged a massive protest at Lower PMG in Bhubaneswar over the rising number of crimes against women in the state.
Hundreds of party workers and leaders including AICC leader Tulika Karma staged the protest under the leadership of Odisha Pradesh Mahila Congress (OPMC) President Meenakshi Bahinipati.
Raising slogans against the Odisha BJP government, the protesters on their way to gherao the Odisha Assembly broke two barricades. They also clashed with the cops for preventing them from marching towards the state assembly.
As a preventive measure, the Commissionerate Police also detained some of the Odisha Congress women leaders and workers.
“Hundreds of women are protesting here because the state government has completely failed to provide safety and security to the women of the state. They (state government) do not know how to respect the women. Permanent principals are not appointed in the colleges and event there are not teachers in the schools. Most importantly, the female teachers, students and even police personnel are being raped,” said Meenakshi Bahinipati while speaking to Kalinga TV.
Adding to Bahinipati, party MLA from Cuttack, Sofia Firdous said, “They (Odisha government) are so scared that they are not accepting our proposals to discuss about it in the assembly. Everyone is aware of the rising number of crimes in the state. Police failed to provide security even to their own home guard.”
She further alleged saying, “There is a clear nexus between the BJD and BJP. BJD is doing exactly what BJP is saying because they are together. Never they worked for the interest of the people. It is only the Congress party which is working and will continue to work for the interest of the people.”
