Congress fields Ghasiram Majhi for Nuapada by-election
As expected, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) on Tuesday fielded its veteran leader Ghasiram Majhi for the upcoming Nuapada by-election to be held next month.
New Delhi: As expected, the Congress party on Tuesday fielded its veteran leader and former MLA Ghasiram Majhi for the upcoming Nuapada by-election to be held next month.
“The Congress President, Shri Mallikarjun Kharge, has approved the candidature of Shri Ghasiram Majhi as Congress candidate for the ensuing bye-election to the Legislative Assembly of Odisha from 71 Nuapada Constituency,” read a press release issued by the AICC General Secretary K.C. Venugopal.
The grand-old party announced Ghasiram Majhi’s candidature a day after the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced the schedule for the upcoming by-polls in the Nuapada assembly constituency. With this, the Congress became the first political party to announce its candidate for by-election which will be held on November 14.
As per the schedule announced by the ECI, the Gazette Notification for Nuapada by-election will be issued on October 13 (Monday) following which the candidates can file their nominations on or before October 20 (Monday).
Scrutiny of the candidates’ nominations will be done on October 22 (Wednesday) while the candidates who want can withdraw their candidatures before October 24 (Friday). Following this, the voting for the Nuapada by-election will be held on November 11 and the counting on November 14.
Notably, the by-poll in Nuapada assembly constituency was necessitated following the untimely death of sitting MLA Rajenda Dholakia, who died on September 8 while undergoing treatment for kidney-related ailments at a private hospital in Chennai. Dholakia, who was 69 year-old during his death, was a four-time MLA from the Nuapada assembly constituency of Odisha and was a minister in the Naveen Patnaik cabinet between June 2022 and June 2024.
