Balangir: Elephant tramples woman to death, 2 others turn critical

Wild elephant entered a Balangir village at night, destroyed a house and killed a woman while two others were seriously injured.

Patnagarh: In a tragic incident, an elephant trampled a woman to death in Balangir district of Odisha on Friday. The incident took place in the Chahakapada village under Lathore Forest Range in Khaprakhol Block in the district.

The deceased woman has been identified as Phulmati Nag, a resident of Chahakapada village. She had come to her parental home along with her husband.

As per sources, the family members were sleeping at their home when the wild elephant entered the village late at night yesterday. It damaged the house, leading to the death of a woman and leaving two others critically injured. As the house collapsed, the family members were trapped under the wall.

After witnessing the pechyderm destroying the house, the locals rushed to the spot and tried to rescue the family members. However,  by then Phulmati Nag had already died on the spot due to severe injuries.

The two other injured persons were first taken to Khaprakhol hospital and later shifted to Patnagarh Medical as their condition deteriorated.

After getting information about the elephant attack the Forest department officials reached the spot and initiated investigation.

The incident has created fear among the villagers, as elephant movement in the area has become frequent.
