16 gates of Hirakud Dam opened due to heavy rainfall in upper catchment area, flood likely in Mahanadi

Cuttack: A flood likely in Mahanadi due to heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas for which 16 sluice gates of Hirakud dam have been opened.

As per reports, 7 lakh cusecs of flood water is expected to reach Mundali by the morning of coming Saturday. The Water Resources Department has feared that the tributary rivers will swell due to this.

All the district collectors have been informed about the possible flood and field officers have been alerted.

A gate has been opened in Rengali on Brahmani River. It is estimated that the water level will reach near the danger signal in Baitarani River.

Despite rain in Subarnarekha and Budhabalanga Rivers, the water level is below the danger level.

As per reports, 41 mm of rainfall has been recorded in the upper catchment area of Hirakud, while the rain is continuing. If rain will still continue, the water level will increase accordingly.

Currently, 2 lakh 46 thousand 913 cubic feet of flood water is entering the reservoir every second while 297,000 cubic feet of floodwater is being released through 16 gates. The water level is currently at 629.21 feet.
