Durga Puja or Durga Pujo is grandly celebrated in Eastern India particularly in Kolkata. The eyes face and head gear of Maa Durga mesmerises the devotees. The décor in the pandals are breath taking and every minute detailing to keep up the originality is taken great care. The eager and curious one might have noticed something bizarre in Maa Durga’s face- a tiny spider (Urnanabha) below the bindi almost on the nose.

In the nine days of Navratri, Maa Durga arrives at her maternal home from Mount Kailash. Preparations are made with much grandeur and elaborate detailed designs.

Maa Durga the symbol of Shakti, is depicted astride a lion, slaying demon Mahishasura. The deities of Lakshmi, Saraswati, Ganesh and Kartikeya on the Puja Pandals are unique to the Bengali culture. Similarly, the tiny spider – The Urnanabha just below the bindi of Maa Durga is specific to the the Dak or the ‘Daker Saaj’ style of idols.
