Indian Railways to hike fares for trains from July 1, check other changes

Indian Railways to hike the train fares from July 1. The Railways is gearing up to bring about some more changes also.

New Delhi: The Indian Railways is set to increase the train fares next month though marginally, said officials. The fares of non-AC class in Mail and the Express trains will be hiked by 1 paise per km but the fares of AC classes will increased by 2 paise per km.

“As compared to the previous fare revisions in 2020 and 2013, the current increase will be the lowest,” a railway official was quoted. In the interest of the daily commuters, the suburban train and monthly season tickets, the hikes will not be implemented.

Here’s what is changing:

  1. Second-class fare up to 500 km of travel to remain unchanged.
  2. Second-class fare for distances beyond 500 km may be hiked by 0.5 paisa per km.

The train fares were last hiked on January 1, 2020. The 2nd class fare for ordinary express was hiked by 1 paisa/km and Mail/ Express trains were raised by 2 paisa/km. For sleeper class and all AC class the fares went up by 2 paisa/km and 4 paisa/km respectively.

The fares will be implemented from July 1. Similarly, Aadhaar authentication to become mandatory for online Tatkal ticketsfrom July 15. The booking of Tatkal Tickets through the Indian Railways IRCTC’s website and mobile app to be available only to Aadhaar authenticated users.

Tatkal tickets at the PRS counters (Passenger Reservation System) and through authorised agents will also require OTP authentication at the time of booking.
