Dhanteras is one of the most important and widely celebrated Hindu festivals in India. It is also called Dhantrayodashi and is observed on the Trayodashi Tithi of Krishna Paksha in the month of Kartik.

This festival is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi (the goddess of wealth) Lord Kuber (the god of prosperity) and Lord Dhanvantri (the god of health). People believe that worshipping them on this day brings wealth, good health and prosperity into their lives.

On this day, people start by cleaning their homes thoroughly, especially the areas where the puja will take place. Houses are decorated with rangoli, flowers, bright lights and diyas are lit to create a festive and positive atmosphere.

Buying new items such as gold, silver, clothes and household goods is considered very auspicious. These items are believed to attract wealth and good fortune.

Auspicious time

In 2025, Dhanteras will fall on October 18. The Trayodashi Tithi begins at 12:18 PM on October 18 and ends at 1:51 PM on October 19.

The most auspicious time for performing Dhanteras Puja is from 7:15 PM to 8:19 PM. During this period, all rituals and prayers are considered highly favorable.

The Pradosh Kaal, another significant time for worship, lasts from 5:48 PM to 8:19 PM and the Vrishabha Kaal is from 7:15 PM to 9:11 PM.

During the puja, families place idols of Lord Ganesha, Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Kuber and Lord Dhanvantri in the decorated puja area. Diyas are lit with ghee, sweets and garlands are offered and tilak is applied to the idols.

People also place the new items they bought during the Shubh Muhurat in front of the idols and offer prayers to charge them with positive energy.

In the evening, a special diya is offered to Lord Yama outside the home, facing southwest to seek protection for the family from untimely death and misfortune.
