In the 18th century, pizza was the fast food of the poor living there. It was made with very few ingredients and eaten by common people. The rich and royal family didn’t give much importance to pizza.

In 1889, Queen Margherita came to Naples, Italy with the King. She wanted to eat something different because she was bored of eating mostly French food. She wanted to eat pizza. A pizzaiolo, Raffaele Esposito, invented a special pizza in her honor by adding cheese, tomatoes, and basil leaves on a base made of safe flour. The toppings represented the Italian flag’s colors. It was different from ordinary pizza, and the Queen liked it a lot, praising it highly. Later, it was named Margherita Pizza in her honor.

After that, it became a royal favorite. Pizza remained a favorite among Queens and Kings, gradually becoming popular.

Later, pizza came to India in 1996 through Italy and America. Various companies opened outlets, and today, pizza’s become almost everyone’s favorite. Its shape has also changed to suit Indian tastes.
