Astaranga: When it comes to seafood, people usually think of sea fish, crabs, and shrimps. These foods are often served as luxury items in high-end hotels to expensive customers. Among these, sea crab is a favorite among non-vegetarian foodies.

Crabs found in the vast sea and Devi River near Astaranga in Puri district, Odisha, are exported to other states in India and abroad. Many species of crabs are found in these waters, including two-star crab, three-star crab, blue crab, and green crab.

These crabs are seasonal, typically available from November to March, their mating season. During this time, local fishermen catch them using box nets and earn a good income. Traders pack the crabs in ice and export them to other places.

However, there’s a unique process involved in exporting sea crabs from Astaranga. After catching the crabs, traders boil them in large containers, separate the meat from the shells, and pack it into polythenes and thermocol boxes with ice. The crab meat is then exported to states like Gujarat and Chennai, and from there, it’s shipped to countries like Australia, England, and America.
