‘Sholay’ returns to Cinemas in 4K with original uncut ending restored after 50 years
The restored version features the original climax, which was cut due to censorship during India's Emergency period in 1975.
Mumbai: The iconic Bollywood film Sholay is back in theaters, and this time, it’s the uncut version that audiences have been waiting for. Sholay: The Final Cut hits cinemas on December 12, 2025, marking the film’s 50th anniversary. The restored version features the original climax, which was cut due to censorship during India’s Emergency period in 1975.
The film has been restored in 4K and Dolby 5.1 by the Film Heritage Foundation, promising an immersive experience for viewers. Sholay: The Final Cut will be released across 1,500 screens in India, giving audiences a chance to experience the film as director Ramesh Sippy intended.
Sholay is widely regarded as one of the greatest Indian films ever made, blending elements of Western, action, drama, and comedy genres. The film’s characters, particularly Jai and Veeru, have become iconic in Indian cinema.
