Howrah: The first consignment of 45-50 tonnes of Hilsa fish from Bangladesh has arrived in the Howrah Wholesale Fish Market, said reports on Friday.

Following the Bangladesh violence, there was apprehension among people as to whether Bangladesh will send the much loved fish or not. But the arrival of Hilsa ahead of Durga Puja festivities has added to the happiness of fish lovers.

On the arrival of the Hilsa fish consignment from Bangladesh, Syed Anwar Maqsood, Secretary, Howrah Wholesale Fish Market Association told ANI, “We had written to Bangladesh interim govt to give us Hilsa fish ahead of Durga Puja. Yesterday, around 45-50 tonnes of Hilsa arrived in West Bengal through Petrapole land border with Bangladesh.”

Further Syed Anwar Maqsood added, “This consignment is being sold in Howrah and Siliguri fish markets today. There is a different type of enthusiasm in people here for ‘Padma Hilsa’ fish. One kilogram of Hilsa fish coming from Bangladesh is being sold at the wholesale rate of Rs 1,400-1500 in the Howrah Wholesale Fish Market. We are hopeful that as more stock of Hilsa fish comes then the price will come down.”
