UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres to embark 3-day visit to India

New Delhi: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will arrive here today on a the-day visit to India, the External Affairs Ministry said.

Guterres will participate in the Mahatma Gandhi International Sanitation Convention at the Rashtrapati Bhawan Cultural Centre on Tuesday.

The event, which began on Saturday, will conclude on Tuesday marking the launch of Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th Birth Anniversary celebrations as well as the 4th anniversary of the Swachh Bharat Mission.

The UN Chief will also attend the joint inaugural ceremony of the First Assembly of International Solar Alliance, 2nd RE-INVEST Conference and Energy Ministers Meet of Indian Ocean Rim Association of States member countries.

He will also call on President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and hold delegation-level talks with External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj.

Ahead of his India visit, Guterres said, India is an important partner of the UN in countering terrorism and preventing violent extremism. He said, there are plans to step up co-operation between UN and India on strengthening capacity in combating terror financing.

The Government of India’s recent contribution to the United Nations Trust Fund for Counter-Terrorism will support the execution of capacity-building projects by the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism, Guterres added.
