US Supreme Court Overturns 50 Years Of Federal Abortion Rights

Abolishing one of the most contentious and passionately contested topics in American politics, the US Supreme Court on Friday declared the right to an abortion to be unconstitutional.

The hidebound Supreme Court repealed the landmark 1973 ‘Roe v Wade’ verdict that preserved the right to abortion for a woman. The court passed a verdict that will enable the individual states to either sanction or forbid the abortion system all by themselves.

The court said that the constitution does not grant the right to abortion; Roe and Casey are overturned, and the jurisdiction to modulate abortion is returned to the public and their elected representatives.

Further, Justice Samuel Alito said that abortion represents a keen moral affair on which Americans hold sharply disputing perspectives. In early May, the majority of Alito’s reasoning was considered consistent due to his draught ruling. The news leaked and prompted protests around the nation resulting in increased security at the court in downtown Washington.

The three liberal judges on the panel dissented that the court’s decision goes against a global trend that has seen abortion restrictions being loosened up, particularly in nations like Ireland, Argentina, Mexico, and Colombia where the Catholic Church continues to have significant sway.

The decision is likely to trigger a flurry of new legislation that severely restricts or outright prohibits abortions in approximately half of the 50 US states, forcing women to travel great distances to jurisdictions that still allow the practice.

It is to be noted that on June 8, after an armed man was detained close to the residence of conservative justice Brett Kavanaugh, barricades were built around the court to keep the demonstrators assembled outside at bay.
