Tanzania confirms outbreak of Marburg virus, WHO supporting to control disease
Reportedly, a total of 25 suspected cases were reported by 20 January 2025. However, all of them tested negative.
New Delhi: Samia Suluhu Hassan, president of Tanzania reportedly announced on Monday an outbreak of Marburg virus in the country.
According to a WHO statement, the outbreak of Marburg virus disease is reported in the northwest Kagera region. A few cases had been suspected. However, following tests, one case tested positive. This was said following investigation and laboratory analysis.
Accordingly, later, President Hasaan announced in a press briefing alongside WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, about the outbreak in Dodoma.
Reportedly, a total of 25 suspected cases were reported by 20 January 2025. However, all of them tested negative. They are currently under close follow-up, the prez said.
This is an Ebola-like virus. WHO is supporting Tanzanian health authorities to enhance key outbreak control measures including disease surveillance, testing, treatment, infection prevention and control, case management, as well as increasing public awareness among communities to prevent further spread of the virus, WHO said.
