Taliban To Meet Envoys From US In Pakistan Next Week

Kabul: Taliban on Thursday said that it will meet envoys from the United States for talks next week in Pakistan, amid an upcoming round of negotiations scheduled to be held in Qatar by the end of this month.

This announcement was followed by a US State Department spokesperson saying in a statement that Washington had “noted” the announcement but had not “received a formal invitation to any talks”.

This is undoubtedly a major achievement for US chief negotiator Zalmay Khalilzad, who is touring the globe to garner support for a peace process to end his country’s longest war.

In his statement, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said his side would also meet Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan to hold “comprehensive discussions about Pakistan-Afghanistan relations”.

However, Islamabad did not immediately confirm the talks. Both the Taliban and the US hailed progress in the peace process after the end of the last round of negotiations in Qatar last month.
