Sri Lanka Parliament passes no-confidence motion against Rajapaksa Govt

Colombo: Srilankan Parliament on Wednesday passed no-confidence motion by voice vote against new Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, who was appointed by President Maithripala Sirisena on October 26.

Parliament Speaker Karu Jayasuriya announced that a majority of the 225-member assembly supported the no-confidence motion against Rajapaksa.

The members of Sirisena’s United People’s Freedom Alliance reportedly protested against the motion and tried to disrupt the vote.

Major political parties, including the United National Party and the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna and an election commission member Ratnajeevan Hoole, on Monday dragged Sirisena to the Supreme Court challenging his decision to dissolve the Parliament almost 20 months before its term.

Sri Lanka has been facing a constitutional crisis after Sirisena on October 26 sacked then Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and suspended the Parliament.
